MAY, MET & THAT GALA!

Aren't we all excited that the month of May is here? Well,
now most of you must be thinking what's so special about this month?
I am sure all the fashion lovers definitely know what am I talking about. Its a month when all the fashion birdies come out to witness the extravagant night of the annual MET Gala! An event full of grandeur, pastiche and theatricality! I don't know about all of you but I wait eagerly for the first Monday of May every year like a watchman waits for the morning. If you all have no idea what am I talking about, lets have a crash course -  The MET Gala also known as the Costume institute gala or MET Ball is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of Metropolitan museum of art's costume institute in New York. It marks the opening of the costume institute's annual fashion exhibit (sigh! enough of that Wikipedia definition) in simple words it's a night full of artistic expression of glamour, where you can dress as crazy as you want without anybody judging you except you should follow the annual theme. Every year the event celebrates the theme of that year's costume institute exhibition and the guests are expected to dress around the theme! And the best part? The event is invitation only with a price tag of $30,000 (so much for the word 'Art & Fashion'). The guest list is decided by non other than our 'Devil Wears Prada' inspiration Anna Wintour, Vogue editor-in-chief and chair of the event since 1995. Whoever knows Anna Wintour or have followed her career keenly knows how specific, professional and legendary she is. Being a part of her guest list marks your arrival and you can brag about it for the rest of your life.
The event includes a cocktail hour and a formal dinner. So at the cocktail hour the real drama begins because the guests are expected to walk the red carpet and pose for  shutterbugs from all around the globe who keep waiting like hawks to grab a piece of them. The global media and fashion critics wait in panels to give their verdict about the best and the worst. Imagine the scrutiny and pressure celebrities go through when they step on that  scarlet red carpet. MET Ball fashion event is one of the widely photographed, reviewed, critiqued, and emulated events of the year. Celebrities and their respective designers begin their preparations and research months before the prestigious event starts.

Actors, models, influencial figures, royal lineage with global presence from all around the world are invited to rub shoulders with each other and sip some of that expensive champagne. Its an over-the-top fashion event and guest are expected to dress crazy, bold and express themselves in the most creative ways. Over the past few decades there have been some iconic looks, which will stay in the archives of the fashion history forever. Madonna, Cher, Sara Jessica Parker, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Kate Moss are few of the names who dazzled on the red carpet and have given us some unforgettable, avant-garde and take-notice looks. If you know your red carpet history you all know exactly what am I talking about. My personal favourites themes were the 2017's Red Kawakubo Comme des Garçons and 2018's Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. This year's exhibition theme is Camp:Notes On Fashion and in my next post I will be talking about this year's MET Ball theme and the red carpet drama but before that lets have a look at some of the iconic ensembles from the historic MET gala.
