Dissecting MET GALA 2019! The Best & The Worst of Fashion.

So the MET GALA  came like a hurricane and left us fashion lovers devastated and now all we need is an <SOS>.  Somebody call 911 please..! It was every bit I expected and more.  This year's theme served us the glamour, the theatrics, over-the-top costumes, wacky makeup, voluminous hairstyles and the real meaning of 'Artifice' was showcased perfectly.  The best part about this year's Gala was that every celebrity tried their best to do the justice with the theme. But then there were some lazy, sloppy ones too, who came to red carpet just for the sake of it and it rubbed me off the wrong way! I mean come on! If you can't dress-up for the event, you better stay in your jammies at home with a bowl of popcorn and watch it on your television.
Like I mentioned in my previous post that the costume exhibition is "Camp: Notes on Fashion" inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay, which defines Camp as "love of unnatural: theatrics and artifice." There was so much to soak in that I am still thinking, which one landed the magic mix between Camp and the fashion perfectly.
This year's Met Gala was hosted by Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Anna Wintour. All the hosts posed in drop-dead gorgeous costumes, doing full justice to their titles and the respective theme.
What I loved the most about this year's event was that not only women showcased their best styles but men gave them a tough competition too. The efforts taken by our macho, masculine Greek Gods is worth the appreciation. Some of them took me by surprise by their creativity and the extravagant costumes they pulled off.
The costumes took us to a whimsical world of fantasy where everyone is beautiful, a little extra and nobody is judgmental. From Lady Gaga's four surprising costume changes on the carpet to Billy Porter's golden, bejewelled, winged Sun God look, this year's Met Gala opened a Pandora's box of fashion and we can't keep calm about it. Lets take a look at few of the best and the worst dresses of this year's Met Gala.

The Best!
Lady Gaga wearing Brandon Maxwell

Lady Gaga
Lets start from someone who was 'BORN THIS WAY' Lady Gaga is a definition of Camp fashion since her early days. She defines theatrics and exaggeration (If you want to know more about Lady Gaga's personal style & her style revolution check out my previous post "Caught in a Bad Romance - Mother Monster's Fashion sense" for an insight). And showing everyone how its done, Gaga arrived in a pink Brandon Maxwell gown with a cascading train and a matching bow on the head. If you think thats all? it isn't! She went on to have four live costume changes, off course with the help of her massive entourage who were holding black umbrellas, her massive train and her 'Haus of Gaga' wagon. (talk about theatrics). First she took off the giant pink gown to reveal an all-black ensemble with a black umbrella as an accessory.

Then, there was another hot pink gown with a giant cell phone giving us all 'Paparazzi' music video vibes (Hello 911? I just killed my boyfriend).

And last but not the least she stripped down to a bra, fishnet stockings and underwear pulling a hot pink wagon from 'Haus of Gaga.'

Katy Perry

Katy Perry made sure that there won't be any power cuts at the MET Gala so she decided to become a chandelier. Now, I wanna swing from the chandelier (Sia? are you listening to me?). I am sure 'Lumiere the candelabra' agrees that she stole the look from him. The art piece was created by Moschino's Jeremy Scott and according to him it's his most complicated and intricate creation till date and I am in no mood to argue with that. People were wondering how would she sit for dinner in that dress or chandelier but she took care of that with a costume change worth the appetite. The metamorphosis from a chandelier to a burger was quite dramatic. (also designed by Moschino)

Billy Porter

Billy Porter gave us an idea if there was an Egyptian Sun God, how it could have looked. Porter is known for his dramatic red carpet appearances and he did justice to his reputation. Carried like a true Pharaoh God by shirtless male attendants, his entry to the gala was quite dramatic.  His gold jumpsuit was created by 'The Blonds.' He later spread his wings to show the world his real powers!

Cardie B

Beetroot can be sexy! This 'Browne' creation took more than 35 people and approximately 2,000 hours to make and Cardie B did justice to his creation. One of the juciest and best dresses of the night!
Cara Delevingne
Model Cara Delevingne looked every inch of a rainbow princess. She looked as if she has descended from the rainbow and is ready to takeover the world! Wearing Dior's haute couture spring/summer 2019 collection, she dominated the red carpet. The best part about her ensemble was her quirky hat made by Machine Dazzle featuring bananas, dentures and eyeballs.

Harry Styles
Harry Styles last name 'Style' is for a reason! As the youngest co-host ever in the Met Gala history, Harry did justice to the theme wearing a sheer ensemble from Gucci. His tattooed torso and his 80's silhouettes of the costume made him an instant hit of the event. It's just dramatic enough!

Lupita Nyong'o

Let your true colours shine has a name - it's Lupita Nyong'o! The iconic dress she wore will be in the archives of Met gala history for ages! Wearing Atelier Versace, she looked like the Goddess of Africa with divine powers.
Maluma
Maluma came to conquer hearts on his first Met Gala and he surely made some heads and shutterbugs turn. Wearing Moschino by Jeremy Scott, he looked out of this world.
Ezra Miller
I have never seen such strong optical illusion makeup on red carpet. This is by far the best optical illusion ever and only Ezra could've pulled it off. Looking at the past fashion resume of the star, this was expected out of him. He always brings his A-game to the red carpet.
Jared Leto

Jared Leto took the statement 'use your head' very seriously and showed up with holding his dummy head on the red carpet. One of the most jaw-dropping moments of the event, Jared took creativity to a whole another level. Wearing Gucci's fall 2018 runway collection, he did justice to the theme. Hats-off to this daring guy who never disappoints us.

There were some honorables mentions, I should name - Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Ciara, Jordan Roth, Kylie & Kendall Jenner, Kacey Musgraves and Saoirse Ronan. They all were at their best!

The Worst
This year's worst dressed list was as shocking as the best dressed one! I mean, what on earth were these stars thinking? I had high expectations from some of these names I am going to mention but they brought apocolyptic fashion on the red carpet.
Priyanka Chopra

I think Priyanka Chopra took the theme too seriously. I have no idea where to begin with. Her Dior dress looked like it was made by first year fashion students and she is about to take part in a college fashion show. Her makeup looked awfully done by a teenage school girl and her hair looked a cheap version of 'Mad Hatter' from 'Alice in Wonderland'. She looked like a drag queen on drugs and suffering from depression. Priyanka forgot the thin line between camp fashion and tacky.
Kim Kardashian West

The drenching dress of Kim Kardashian was another example of utter disappointment. The tight corseted Thierry Mugler waist suffocating dress with hanging beads that looked like droplets of water, made her look like she was pushed in a pool and had no time to change. So she decided to show-up at the carpet in a hurry dripping water allover! And the unflattering silhouettes of the dress were not fit for such an event.
Kanye West
Kanye West didn't wanted to come to the Met Gala and Kim Kardashian threatened him that if he won't join her, poor Kanye has to sleep on the couch. So he finally decided to show-up wearing his casual jacket and trousers.  What could be the better excuse not dressing-up for such an event? Apparently his expressions tell us that he didn't wanted to join Kim this year.

Other worst dressed contenders who gave a tough competition to each other are as follows - Gigi 'the overconfident' Hadid, Kris 'the try hard old Jenner', Shawn 'the lazy' Mendes, Haley 'the bubblegum' Baldwin, Deepika 'the lets play sweet Barbie always' Padukone and Gwyneth 'what am I even doing here' Paltrow.

See you next year MET GALA!
